Wild Sheep Chase @ Taman Desa

Meeting with friends at tea time (which was later than our usual meet-ups), we had to have dessert first before our scheduled dinner.
 
Let's just say that it won't be a wild goose chase to get to Wild Sheep Chase @ Taman Desa that specialises in one thing....soufflés.  In fact, this 5-month old café (located on the first floor) is the first of its kind dedicated to serving soufflés.

The predominantly pristine white café, with splashes of beige and brown, fresh flowers and natural sunlight streaming through the glass windows, is both cozy and warm.
 
Looking back, I can't remember if I've ever had a soufflé (my friends have not) as it's not a dessert commonly found in many restaurants' menu.  Although I do know what a soufflé is from all the episodes I've watched in the Masterchef series.  It's like a 'death dish' to the contestants (next to risotto) because of the difficulty in getting it right....and getting it to rise perfectly! ;D
 
Here, you don't have to worry as it's their speciality.  So we ordered their signature Vanilla Souffle @ RM15 served with a choice of orange sauce or osmanthus maple syrup and grapefruit sorbet with a dusting of powdered sugar over the top.
 
It's clearly stated on their menu that their desserts are baked to order (and to allow 20 - 30 minutes of waiting time) as it should be coz soufflés need to be served immediately after it's taken out from the oven as it generally falls after 5 - 10 minutes.  So, for photo taking enthusiasts, take the snapshots of your well risen soufflé quickly (like we did).....coz you wouldn't want to end up with a deflated soufflé (like the one I saw on the table next to us)! :p
 
I chose the (more tangy) orange sauce instead of the (sweeter) osmanthus maple syrup to go with our soufflé.  The grapefruit sorbet that came along with soufflé, though refreshing, had a slight bitterness to it though.
 
The soufflé was fluffy, light and airy as a soufflé should be with a hint of egg taste in the soufflé base.  It had a melt-in-your-mouth texture with a soft, creamy centre.  It was good.
 
The soufflé tasted even better when I poured the orange sauce all over it which gave it that tangy taste...and made the soufflé pop! ;)
 
Although their main focus is on soufflés, they do offer other desserts on the menu (actually only two) and the Honestly Devilish @ RM21 is one of them (the other being Waffles served with early grey whipped cream & osmanthus maple syrup @ RM13).  
 
The Honestly Devilish is nothing but a chocolate lava cake served with vanilla ice cream.  Of course, for a molten chocolate cake to succeed, you have to have the warm, ooey-gooey centre flowing out like lava (like in the pic).  This moist lava cake was more than decent although the vanilla ice cream was a tad sweet (eaten on its own) but fine paired with the cake.  What gave it the edge was the drizzle of lemon sauce which cut through the richness of the chocolate cake and freshened up the plate.
 
We also ordered the Ciabatta Salmon & Mascarpone Sandwich @ RM22 to share as we needed something to tie us over until dinner time.  In fact, if you're hungry (as we obviously were and that's why the pic showed a half eaten ciabatta...oops!) and want a more substantial meal, I'm sorry to say that you only have two choices, this and the Ciabatta Ham & Cheese Sandwich @ RM20.
 
The freshly in-house made ciabatta (with slices of fresh salmon, cucumber, tomatoes and lettuce leaf) comes with a serving of grilled vegetables (eggplant, cucumber and mushrooms) and a scoop of egg mayo.  It had a very clean taste and, depending how you see it, for some, this would be a pretty bland sandwich...for others, it's a very healthy sandwich but somewhat pricey! :(
 
Apart from the three desserts and two sandwiches, drinks are also limited to just three...simple black or milk coffee (don't expect any coffee art) and early grey milk tea (or six choices if you add the iced versions).
 
My friend had the Milk Coffee (Hot) @ RM10 while she waited for us to arrive.  I'm not sure how the coffees fared here as I didn't taste any but she seemed to like it.
 
The rest of us went with the highly recommended Earl Grey Milk Tea (Hot) @ RM10 with milk, honey and a sprinkling of lemon peel.  As soon as the cup of tea hit the table, the distinctive smell of fresh lemon came shining through and you can definitely taste the fragrance of the lemon in the tea.  It was a very nice cup of tea indeed!
 
The Iced Earl Grey Milk Tea @ RM12 was good too, just not as good as the hot version.
 
As Saturday is usually fresh flowers day (according to their Facebook)....and indeed it was, looking at how fresh the roses were that day, I couldn't help but take more photos! ;p
 
My Personal Opinion
 
One should definitely come here for the soufflé and milk tea....and nothing else!  Well, actually, there isn't much of anything else >.<  But, there's hope as they've announced a new menu in December...and, hopefully, there will be a few more additions.
 
Limited choices aside, the desserts are by no means cheap.  Some will probably find the price a bit on the high side for a soufflé that one can finish in a few mouthfuls....but I'm pretty happy with it! :)

  1. This place is quite near my area. Guess souffles lovers would like to eat here. They are not my thing so I think I will pass.

    1. What is it about soufflés that you don't like? For me, it's like a cross between a cake and a custard. Maybe that bland sandwich could be your thing here? ;)

    2. I can make my own sandwich, thank you. :) Souffles texture is not like custard. I don't like the texture of souffles - too soft just like I don't like whipped cream.

  2. one of the nice things about the souffles here is the price ... they'd cost a lot more at other restaurants! :)

    1. Oh, they do? And I thought that RM15 was expensive for something so small. I guess I've not noticed the prices in restaurants offering souffles!

  3. "Had" to have dessert before dinner. You're mind kind of friend. ;-) Souffle is quite a tricky dessert to get right. Looks like they've aced it here.

  4. No wonder the few souffles that I've had before all felt like cakes. Must have all been poorly made :| .. I wouldn't mind having them here, but I think I'll give the 'wiches a pass. They don't look too... appetizing to me..

    1. That's a healthy sandwich....that's why it doesn't look very appetising! Haha! :D If the soufflés you've had before felt like cakes, they're too dense already.

  5. Having desserts first is a great idea hah..hah... I have not had a souffle before. The name of the cafe is quite unusual - Wild Sheep Chase, I wonder why they named it such. It would be a good idea for them to expand on the menu because I think (I could be wrong) it would be quite hard to survive just serving souffles and limited food choices.

    1. Yes, I agree...coz once the hype dies down, you've got to have something more than just soufflés to keep the customers coming back. Wild Sheep Chase is actually the name of a Japanese novel, it seems.
